French video game developer Dont Nod Entertainment, known for its work on the acclaimed Life is Strange series, is facing a severe financial crisis. The company has announced plans to potentially lay off up to 90 employees and has issued a stark warning that it might not survive beyond January 2025 without urgent new financing.
Deepening Financial Woes
In a report for the first half of 2026, Dont Nod revealed that its board has approved a new business model that necessitates significant workforce reductions. This move comes despite previous efforts to improve performance and cut costs, which the company admits have been insufficient to restore long-term competitiveness.
“Despite the performance improvement plan and a series of cost reduction actions that have been implemented, these efforts have not been enough to restore our long-term competitiveness,” the company stated. “We are rethinking our French operations, focusing our operational priorities on a single franchise while consolidating the skills required to launch new projects.”
The studio, founded in 2008, has struggled to recover following the underwhelming sales of its latest title, Aphelion, released in April. An audit conducted in June had already flagged the company’s precarious financial situation, warning that it could run out of cash by the end of the current year.
Urgent Need for Funding
Compounding the issue, Dont Nod confirmed that Tencent, which acquired a minority stake in the company in 2020, has no current plans to provide additional investment. This lack of a financial backstop leaves Dont Nod in a critical position.
“Without new financing secured rapidly, the company may not be able to continue its operations beyond January 31, 2025,” the company warned in its financial report.
The potential closure of Dont Nod would be a significant blow to the gaming industry, given its reputation for narrative-driven, character-focused experiences. The studio’s flagship series, Life is Strange, garnered critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase for its unique storytelling and emotional depth. Other notable titles from Dont Nod include Remember Me and Vampyr.
The company’s restructuring plan aims to streamline operations and concentrate resources on core projects, potentially paving the way for future success if the immediate financial hurdles can be overcome. However, the immediate future remains uncertain for the talented team at Dont Nod and the beloved franchises they have brought to life.
