Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has unveiled its first all-electric California camper van, the ID. California Cruise concept, at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf, Germany. This innovative recreational vehicle, based on the ID. Buzz Pro, aims to blend the iconic California lifestyle with cutting-edge electric mobility.
Electrifying the California Dream
The ID. California Cruise concept builds upon the popular ID. Buzz platform, offering both short and long wheelbase variants. This electric reimagining of the classic California camper is set to launch with a starting price of €60,761 (approximately ¥477,000 RMB) in Germany. Distinguishing itself visually, the tailgate proudly displays the “California” script, while the side features “California Cruise” decals.
Comfort and Convenience on Wheels
Inside, the rear of the van is designed for comfort and relaxation. It features a three-section mattress measuring 3.5 inches (9 cm) thick, providing a sleeping area that is 80 inches (2,030 mm) long and 47.2 inches (1,200 mm) wide. This setup transforms the ID. California Cruise into a cozy mobile retreat.
Range and Power Capabilities
Under the hood, the ID. California Cruise will leverage the existing ID. Buzz battery options, offering either a 79 kWh or an 86 kWh high-density battery pack. These are expected to deliver a pure electric range of approximately 250 to 300 miles (402 to 482 km) on the WLTP cycle. This range is suitable for weekend getaways and longer journeys alike.
But the innovation doesn’t stop at propulsion. The vehicle’s onboard battery is not just for driving; it’s designed to be a massive mobile power station.
The onboard battery serves a dual purpose, acting as both the vehicle’s power source and a substantial external power supply. Through multiple outlets distributed throughout the vehicle, the ID. California Cruise can output a stable 2000 watts (2kW) of AC power. This capability allows users to power everyday appliances such as coffee machines, refrigerators, and induction cooktops, making outdoor living and camping significantly more convenient.
