Hyundai Motor Company has announced its ambitious timeline for deploying autonomous driving technology, confirming plans to deliver its first Waymo self-driving robotaxis in the fourth quarter of 2026. These groundbreaking vehicles will be based on the popular Hyundai IONIQ 5 electric vehicle platform.

Ramping Up Robotaxi Services

The revelation came during Hyundai’s CEO Investor Day event held in Seoul, South Korea. Motional, a joint venture between Hyundai and Aptiv, is slated to commence commercial operations of the IONIQ 5-based robotaxis in Las Vegas, USA, in late 2026. This initial launch is just the beginning, with plans to expand the service to additional cities in 2027.

This move positions Hyundai and its partners at the forefront of the rapidly evolving autonomous mobility sector. Waymo, a pioneer in self-driving technology, has also indicated its intention to broaden its own international robotaxi services, potentially as early as 2027. This collaboration signifies a significant step towards making autonomous ride-hailing a mainstream reality.

Advancing Consumer-Facing Autonomous Tech

Beyond the commercial robotaxi ventures, Hyundai is also making strides in developing advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) for consumer vehicles. The company plans to deploy its ‘Atria AI’ system by the end of 2026. This sophisticated system is designed to power Hyundai’s Level 2+ semi-autonomous driving capabilities, with these systems expected to roll out in production models around 2028.

Hyundai envisions Atria AI as a foundational technology that will gradually be integrated across its range of mass-produced vehicles. This strategic rollout aims to create a comprehensive autonomous driving product lineup, spanning from Level 2+ capabilities all the way up to fully autonomous Level 4 systems. This tiered approach allows for a progressive introduction of advanced features to a wider customer base.

Unified Data Ecosystem

Further bolstering its autonomous driving ambitions, Hyundai Motor Group is also focusing on establishing a unified sensor architecture in collaboration with NVIDIA. This initiative aims to ensure that data collected by Hyundai, Kia, 42dot, and Motional adheres to a common standard. By enabling the seamless sharing and utilization of data across these entities, the Group intends to accelerate the development and refinement of its autonomous driving technologies.

This interconnected data strategy is crucial for enhancing the performance and safety of self-driving systems. A standardized approach allows for more efficient learning and validation of algorithms, ultimately paving the way for more robust and reliable autonomous vehicles across all Hyundai Motor Group brands.
