The National Communications Regulation Commission (NCRC) has set up a working group to make a decision on extension of the licenses of the Ukrtelecom, the largest telecommunications company in Ukraine, to provide long-distance and international communications services.

The commission announced this in a statement.

Members of the working group include representatives of central agencies of the executive branch of government.

According to the register of licenses issued for communications operations, Ukrtelecom was issued a license for construction and technical servicing of networks for long-distance and international telephone services and provision of services in these networks (these licenses expired on September 18).

This license was issued before the adoption of the law “On Telecommunications” (2004), which requires telecommunications operators to obtain two licenses: a license for provision of long-distance communications services and a license for provision of international communications services.

It will cost the company more than UAH 18 million to obtain the two licenses while the cost of extending a license is 30% of the original cost of the license (according to the legislation).

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Ukrtelecom reported a net profit of UAH 47.973 million for the period of January-June 2010, when its net revenues increased by UAH 108.362 million or 3.3% to UAH 3,402.463 million compared with the corresponding period of 2009.

Ukrtelecom reported a loss of UAH 456.426 million for the year 2009, when its net revenues increased by UAH 225.202 million or 3.39% to UAH 6,870.931 million compared with 2008.

Ukrtelecom has a 78.5% share of the fixed-line telephone market in Ukraine and provides services to 9.9 million subscribers.
