Jack Dorsey's Block now also has an AI agent

Block has created its own open-source artificial intelligence agent. The tool, codenamed Goose, allows users to perform tasks using popular large-scale language models.

“You can think of Goose as an assistant that’s ready to take your instructions and do the work for you,” Block explains in his blog post. According to the company, the agent can autonomously perform engineering tasks such as finding bugs or making code changes.

Users can configure goose to run on the LLM of their choice. Iit supports Anthropic, Gemini, OpenAI, and others, although the company claims that it “works best” with Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet and OpenAI’s o1 model. It is also extension compatible, allowing it to connect to popular developer tools such as GitHub and Google Drive,

Block is, of course, known for its financial apps Square and Cash App, as well as music streaming service Tidal, which it acquired in 2021. These may not be the industries you immediately associate with AI development, but Block founder Jack Dorsey is a longtime supporter of open source software. The company also notes that over time, goose may expand to “non-engineering use cases.” Blockchain engineer Brad Exen told ZDNET that the company sees more “creative” uses for goose, such as music creation.
