BYD’s luxury off-road electric SUV, the Yangwang U8, is receiving a significant new over-the-air (OTA) software update. This update brings a host of enhancements across various aspects of the vehicle, including off-road capabilities, in-car connectivity, user experience, and intelligent driving safety features. The update is rolling out to the 2023 U8 Luxury, 2024 U8 Off-road Player, and 2026 U8 Luxury models.

Smarter Sentry Mode and Enhanced Off-Road Interface

A standout feature in this OTA update is the enhancement of the Sentry Mode. Users can now schedule specific times for Sentry Mode to be active or inactive, offering greater control and convenience. Additionally, the system introduces a ‘Trusted Location’ feature. Owners can designate areas like their home or workplace as trusted zones, preventing Sentry Mode from activating automatically within these areas. This aims to reduce unnecessary power consumption while still providing security when needed. The feature also includes a reserve battery threshold, automatically disabling Sentry Mode if the battery level drops below a set point, balancing security with range preservation.

For those utilizing the U8’s powerful ‘Yisifang’ (e-Four) system, the infotainment system now remembers the user’s preferred interface view. Drivers can switch between 2D and 3D displays for the Yisifang system, and the system will retain the last selected view upon reopening the application. This feature is particularly beneficial during off-road excursions, allowing for a more intuitive and streamlined user experience.

The central console has also been updated with a new clock widget for the desktop, displaying the time, date, and day of the week. This widget can be repositioned to the user’s preference, offering a more direct way to check the time while driving.

Apple CarPlay Integration and Audio Improvements

Perhaps one of the most anticipated additions is the official support for Apple CarPlay. The integration is presented in a ‘windowed’ format, meaning CarPlay applications like navigation, phone, music, and messaging run in smaller, independent windows on the central infotainment screen. This allows CarPlay content to operate alongside the vehicle’s native systems, providing the convenience of familiar apps without dominating the entire display and enabling multitasking.

Complementing the connectivity upgrades, the U8 now features an intelligent ‘Sound Field Focusing’ mode. This system automatically adjusts the audio sound field based on the seating position of the occupants, optimizing the listening experience for everyone in the cabin. Furthermore, the ‘Heavenly Eye’ (Tian Shen Zhi Yan) Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) app includes a new button for quicker feedback on driving assistance issues, streamlining the reporting process for users.

Safety Enhancements and Detail Optimizations

The new OTA update also bolsters safety with several new functions. A ‘door not closed’ voice broadcast notification has been added for when the vehicle is parked after the driver exits. If the doors or trunk are not properly closed before initiating a parking maneuver, the vehicle will issue an audible alert via external speakers, helping to prevent parking-related risks.

In terms of active safety, if the driver takes their hands off the steering wheel for an extended period while ADAS is engaged, the vehicle will not only slow down and stop but also provide a vibrating alert via the seatbelt, ensuring the driver remains attentive. A new ‘over-speeding in curves’ warning setting has also been implemented, providing both visual and auditory alerts when the vehicle’s speed exceeds safe limits for a given curve.

The update includes a series of smaller but significant optimizations as well. The ‘Cloud Vehicle’ (Yun Nian) 3D model has been upgraded to a physical model that accurately reflects the vehicle’s body color, with an improved interface background. The smart charging interface now features 3D animations, and the ‘Dynamic Island’ notification area has gained a ‘sparkling water’ music icon. The bottom navigation bar’s headlight control now includes a quick toggle for the daytime running lights. For the 2026 Luxury model specifically, enhancements include memory functions for seat heating and ventilation, and voice control for the power adjustment of exterior mirrors.
