Xpeng Motors has announced a significant milestone for its Robotaxi service, XPENG YOYO, formerly known as the Xpeng Robotaxi. The company has officially received approval from Guangzhou authorities to commence L4-level autonomous driving demonstration operations across the entire city.
A Stepped Approach to Autonomous Mobility
This approval marks the culmination of a well-defined strategy for Xpeng in the autonomous driving sector. The journey began in January of this year when Xpeng Motors secured the permit for intelligent connected vehicle road testing in Guangzhou, paving the way for regular, L4-level testing on public roads. In March, the company established a dedicated Robotaxi business unit, consolidating product definition, research and development, testing, and operational aspects to accelerate commercialization.
From Production Line to Public Roads
A key development occurred in May when the first production-ready Robotaxi vehicle for Xpeng, the GX, rolled off the assembly line. This was followed by the commencement of internal testing in July. Notably, Xpeng Chairman and CEO, He Xiaopeng, was among the first users to experience the service during this internal testing phase.
Progress Towards Unsupervised Operations
Further underscoring the progress, in August, He Xiaopeng revealed that the front-mounted, mass-produced Robotaxi, equipped with the second-generation VLA (Vehicle-to-Everything) technology, had completed over 2,000 internal test orders in Guangzhou. This testing phase successfully validated the entire process of human-supervised demonstration operations. The company has also developed a platform for remote cloud-based takeover, with the ambitious goal of achieving driverless passenger operations by next year.
XPENG YOYO: A New Identity
Earlier this month, on October 8th, Xpeng Motors officially announced the name for its Robotaxi service: “XPENG YOYO.” The Chinese name, “小鹏悠游” (Xiǎo péng yōu yóu), translates to a travel experience that is “leisurely in heart, and free-flowing in journey.” The English name, “XPENG YOYO,” is designed for easy pronunciation and recognition globally.

The granting of the L4 autonomous driving demonstration operation qualification in Guangzhou positions Xpeng as a leader in the burgeoning Robotaxi market. With a clear roadmap and tangible progress, Xpeng is moving closer to integrating autonomous ride-hailing services into the daily fabric of urban transportation, promising a future of safer, more efficient, and potentially more accessible mobility.
