Xiaomi is gearing up to launch its latest foldable smartphone, the Xiaomi 18 Fold, which is set to debut with the brand new HyperOS 4 and a groundbreaking AI flagship SoC dubbed ‘Xuanjie O3’. The company has been teasing the device, highlighting its novel folding form factor and significant performance upgrades.
Introducing the Xuanjie O3 AI Flagship SoC
At the heart of the Xiaomi 18 Fold lies the Xuanjie O3, an AI flagship System-on-Chip (SoC) designed for Xiaomi’s premium products. This new chip has achieved an astounding AnTuTu benchmark score of over 5.22 million, making it the first mobile processor to surpass the 5 million mark. The Xuanjie O3 features a ten-core, all-big-core CPU design, pushing multi-core scores beyond 15,000 for a 60% performance increase. The GPU sees a substantial generational leap with the G2-Ultra NX graphics processor, delivering an 85% performance boost while reducing power consumption by 64%.
Memory and AI Capabilities
The Xuanjie O3 also marks a significant advancement in memory technology, being the first mobile processor to support LPDDR6 memory. This enables a memory bandwidth of up to 113.8GB/s, a 48% improvement over the previous generation, Xuanjie O1. The NPU architecture has been completely redesigned, boasting an impressive 200TOPS of tensor computing power and 3.13TFLOPS of vector computing power, specifically optimized for Xiaomi’s MiMo on-device large models. This results in a 45% increase in on-device AI performance.
Xiaomi has integrated AI across all modules of the Xuanjie O3. The CPU includes dual SME2 acceleration units, the GPU adds eight NX neural network accelerators, the Image Signal Processor (ISP) features an AINR unit, the Display Processing Unit (DPU) incorporates hardware AI super-resolution, and the Digital Signal Processor (ADSP) has an integrated AI engine. These enhancements promise comprehensive upgrades in on-device AI, hardware-level super-resolution frame interpolation, and noise reduction for night-time video recording.
HyperOS 4: Enhanced Efficiency and Ecosystem Integration
The Xiaomi 18 Fold will be the first device to launch with Xiaomi HyperOS 4. This latest iteration of Xiaomi’s operating system aims to deliver a seamless and fluid user experience, focusing on three core upgrades:
- Basic Experience: Achieving a consistently smooth and stable user experience that feels natural and effortless, allowing users to complete tasks in one go.
- Functional Upgrades: Introducing intuitive and user-friendly features that enhance ease of use and facilitate seamless cross-device interaction.
- Ecosystem AI Collaboration: Continuously developing AI capabilities that work across applications and devices, understanding user needs and completing complex tasks automatically, thereby simplifying daily life.
The first batch of devices for HyperOS 4 user recruitment, including models like the Xiaomi 17 and the REDMI K90 series, began in August. The new OS promises to double efficiency and provide a “flow-like” experience.
Performance and Durability Under Stress
Xiaomi also highlighted the performance capabilities of the 18 Fold during a rigorous one-hour heavy load test on its large screen. The results indicated stable frame rates and consistent cool operation throughout the challenging test, suggesting robust thermal management and sustained performance, even under demanding conditions.
With the Xuanjie O3 chip and HyperOS 4, the Xiaomi 18 Fold is positioned to offer a significant leap in smartphone performance, AI capabilities, and overall user experience, particularly within Xiaomi’s interconnected ecosystem. The emphasis on efficiency and a fluid user interface suggests a refined approach to both hardware and software integration.
