xAI may be getting its own app in the nearest future

Elon Musk’s xAI company may soon take the next step in its competition with OpenAI: launching a separate app for its chatbot Grok.

Musk created xAI as an alternative to OpenAI, a company he helped found but later distanced himself from due to ideological differences. Now, according to The Wall Street Journal, xAI plans to launch an app as early as December that could compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT as it tries to scale up.

Currently, users can access Grok via X, but only if they subscribe to the service. Citing unnamed sources, the magazine reports that xAI is also behind the customer support functions for Starlink, part of Musk’s other company, SpaceX. X did not immediately respond to a request for comment for this report.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude already have their own apps and free products, making Grok stand out from the crowd.
