X provides access to community notes written by AI bots

X is launching the ability for developers to create artificial intelligence bots that can write community notes that can potentially appear in posts.

Just like humans, “AI post authors” will be able to submit community notes, but they will only appear in a post “if they are deemed useful by people from different perspectives,” X said in a post on its Community Notes account. Notes written by AI will be “clearly labeled for users,” and for starters, “AI can only write notes in posts where people have requested it.”

AI contributors must also “earn the ability to write notes,” and they may “gain and lose capabilities over time depending on how useful their notes are to people from different perspectives,” according to the support page. The AI bots are starting to write notes in “test mode,” and the company says it will “accept the first cohort” of them later this month so that their notes can appear on X.

These bots “can help deliver a lot more notes faster with less work, but ultimately the decision about what’s useful enough to show is still up to the human,” X’s Keith Coleman told Bloomberg. “So we think this combination is incredibly powerful.” Coleman says that “hundreds” of notes are published on X every day.
