Insomniac Games has released a hotfix update for Marvel’s Wolverine, addressing a core mechanic that players have affectionately (and sometimes sarcastically) nicknamed “p-smell” – the visual scent trail.

Scent Trail Adjustment

The scent trail, displayed as a diffuse bright blue line on the screen, is a key feature that guides Wolverine towards his next objective and helps locate collectibles on the map. Players have found this visual cue to be particularly prominent and, at times, distracting.

The patch, version 01.001.005, doesn’t remove the scent trail entirely. Instead, it significantly reduces its opacity, making the visual effect less obtrusive. Accompanying audio cues related to scent perception have also been weakened to match the visual adjustment.

Player Feedback and Future Plans

The nickname “p-smell” gained traction online, with many players finding the visual representation humorous and wanting options to disable it. Even before the game’s official release, fans had been vocal in their requests for an option to turn off the scent trail, citing its interference with gameplay.

In their blog post announcing the hotfix, Insomniac Games acknowledged the feedback. The development team stated that they are “still evaluating further optimizations for the perception system” and are actively researching the possibility of adding a toggle to completely disable the feature in a future update. This indicates a responsiveness to player experience and a commitment to refining the game post-launch.

Bug Fixes and Sales Data

Beyond the scent trail adjustment, the update also resolves game-crashing issues encountered by a small segment of the player base. While the exact number of affected players is not specified, the fix aims to improve stability for those who experienced these disruptions.

Sony has yet to release official sales figures for Marvel’s Wolverine. However, early estimates suggest the game has achieved approximately 1.9 million units in sales, encompassing digital pre-orders and day-one sales. This initial performance has reportedly generated around $130 million USD (approximately 872 million CNY at current exchange rates) for Sony.

Interestingly, physical edition sales accounted for 22.9% of the total. This figure is notably lower compared to Insomniac’s previous title, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, where physical editions represented 35% of total sales, suggesting a stronger preference for digital purchases among Wolverine’s player base.
