Win11 Search Connects Android Apps Directly

Microsoft is reportedly testing a streamlined approach for interacting with Android applications on Windows 11, moving away from the full Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA). In recent Experimental channel preview builds, such as Windows 11 Build 26340.9843, the company is exploring a lighter alternative that allows users to search for and launch apps directly from their connected Android phones.

Seamless Mobile App Integration

This new feature, observed in preview builds for Windows 11 26H1 and 26H2, enables users to find and open apps installed on their Android devices directly through the Windows search bar. Once a compatible phone is connected via Phone Link, users can initiate actions like making calls or sending messages, and even toggle features like ‘Do Not Disturb’ directly from Windows search. While currently supporting Android devices, support for iPhones is anticipated in early next year.

A demonstration showcased a user searching for the ‘Bluesky’ mobile app in the Windows search bar. The system recognized it as a ‘mobile app’ result. Upon clicking ‘Open’, the app launched on the connected Samsung Galaxy A26 phone (running Android 16) and was then mirrored to the PC via the Phone Link app as a ‘phone screen’ window. This allowed the user to control the app using their PC’s keyboard and mouse, leveraging the larger display.

A Lighter Touch Than Full WSA

Crucially, this functionality does not involve installing Android apps directly onto the Windows 11 PC. Instead, it relies on app streaming. The applications continue to run entirely on the smartphone, with the PC serving as an interface for display and control. This approach offers a significantly shorter user path compared to the previous method, which required manually opening the Phone Link application and then selecting an app to mirror.

The Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA), introduced in 2021, was Microsoft’s previous solution for running Android apps on Windows 11. Initially integrated with the Amazon Appstore, Microsoft has announced that official support for WSA will conclude on March 5, 2025. The development of this new, lighter alternative suggests a strategic shift in how Microsoft aims to integrate mobile experiences into the Windows ecosystem.

This evolution in Windows 11’s mobile integration promises a more convenient and less resource-intensive way for users to interact with their smartphone applications directly from their desktop environment.
