WeChat’s HarmonyOS version is rolling out a significant update, enabling users to control the app using voice commands via Huawei’s XiaoYi assistant. This new integration, powered by A2A (App-to-App) capabilities, allows for hands-free messaging and calling directly through voice prompts.

Voice-Activated Messaging and Calls

According to user reports and tech blogger @倘心葡牲牙Ciuciu, the latest update to the WeChat mobile app on HarmonyOS (version 8.0.22) incorporates A2A functionality. This means users can now say “Hey XiaoYi” to initiate actions within WeChat. Currently, the supported commands include sending text messages to contacts and initiating voice or video calls with friends.

However, the functionality is not yet comprehensive. Users will find that sending messages with emojis is not supported, and the ability to send messages or initiate calls to group chats is also absent. Furthermore, features related to WeChat’s dual-instance functionality (分身) are not controllable via XiaoYi at this time.

XiaoYi Update Required

For this feature to work, users need to ensure their XiaoYi assistant is updated to version 11.7.8.303. This update is crucial for enabling the A2A capabilities that allow seamless interaction between the XiaoYi assistant and the WeChat application.

A Step Towards Deeper Ecosystem Integration

This development marks another step in Huawei’s push for deeper integration within its HarmonyOS ecosystem. By enabling third-party applications like WeChat to interact with its AI assistant, Huawei is enhancing the user experience and making device interaction more fluid and intuitive. The A2A framework allows apps to communicate with each other and with system services in a secure and standardized way, paving the way for more advanced cross-app functionalities.

While the current implementation focuses on basic messaging and calling features, the potential for A2A integration is vast. Future updates could see XiaoYi assisting with a wider range of WeChat functions, from managing group chats to sharing content, further solidifying the utility of Huawei’s operating system.

The A2A capability signifies a move towards a more connected and intelligent device experience, where users can orchestrate complex tasks using simple voice commands across different applications. This is particularly beneficial for users who value convenience and hands-free operation, especially while driving or multitasking.

It remains to be seen how quickly other popular applications will adopt similar A2A integrations with XiaoYi, but this move by WeChat is a strong indicator of the direction the HarmonyOS ecosystem is heading.
