WeChat is stepping up its support for original content creators by launching an incentive program for novel adaptations into short dramas. The initiative, jointly announced by the WeChat Open Platform and WeChat Video Accounts teams, aims to foster collaboration between authors and production companies.

Encouraging Short Drama Adaptations

The first phase of the “Official Account Novel Adaptation Short Drama: Phase One” incentive activity has selected 10 popular WeChat novels. The platform has already confirmed adaptation intentions with the authors of these works. This move signifies WeChat’s commitment to enriching its ecosystem with engaging short-form video content derived from existing literary works.

Incentive Details for Creators and Producers

Under the new program, both short drama production companies (承制方) and original authors will receive an additional 5% cash incentive on their revenue generated from WeChat ecosystem’s prioritized distribution. This incentive is capped and applies to collaborations formed within the activity’s validity period, provided the adaptation is completed and prioritized for release within the WeChat ecosystem as required. The incentive is calculated based on the monetization revenue earned during the first 30 days of prioritized release.

It’s important to note that WeChat Open Platform will not claim ownership of the novel’s copyright or adaptation rights. The specific adaptation collaborations will be negotiated and agreed upon directly between the production companies and the authors, culminating in a signed agreement.

Requirements for Prioritized Distribution

Production companies are required to negotiate and sign adaptation agreements with the authors. These agreements must be submitted to the platform in written form to support the prioritized release of the short dramas within the WeChat ecosystem. The contract signing period is set between November 1, 2026, and December 31, 2026.

The adapted short dramas are slated for prioritized distribution on the “Green Bubble” (绿泡泡) short drama mini-program and as native short dramas within WeChat Video Accounts. The “prioritized distribution period” refers to the first 30 days post-release, during which revenue will be considered for the incentive calculation.

This initiative is expected to drive more high-quality novel adaptations, providing new avenues for authors to monetize their work and for production companies to create compelling short-form content for WeChat’s massive user base. By offering a clear incentive structure and prioritizing distribution, WeChat is fostering a more dynamic and collaborative environment for content creation and consumption within its platform.
