At the inaugural Volkswagen Group (China) Technology Day, the automotive giant unveiled its integrated technology matrix, codenamed “VEGA.” This comprehensive system encompasses three core technical pillars: vehicle platforms, electronic and electrical architecture (CEA), and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).

Software-Defined Vehicles at the Core

Volkswagen emphasized that software capabilities are central to its vehicle development strategy. The company declared that every vehicle equipped with the CEA architecture will be a true “software-defined vehicle.” The CEA architecture is designed for flexibility, capable of supporting compact to full-size models and accommodating various powertrain types, including pure electric and internal combustion engines.

The update roadmap for the CEA architecture is ambitious, promising significant software function updates every three months and a comprehensive architecture upgrade every two years. This continuous evolution aims to ensure vehicles remain state-of-the-art throughout their lifespan.

Rollout and Future Capabilities

Volkswagen outlined a phased rollout plan for the CEA architecture:

  • By 2026, the CEA architecture will be integrated into five locally produced Volkswagen brand pure electric models: the Viloran 06, Viloran 07, ID. ERA 5X, ID. AURA T6, and ID. AURA L5.
  • In 2027, the CEA architecture’s reach will expand to cover plug-in hybrid and internal combustion engine vehicles produced by the group in China, injecting intelligence into traditional fuel-powered cars. This year also marks a significant milestone with the central integration of cockpit and intelligent driving computing, laying the groundwork for L3 autonomous driving readiness and deep integration of intelligent AI.
  • By 2029, CEA 3.0 is slated to support full-domain intelligent AI, enabling the development of L4 autonomous driving technology. This will also facilitate seamless integration between intelligent AI and the user’s daily smart ecosystem.

The VEGA technology matrix, spearheaded by the CEA architecture, represents Volkswagen’s commitment to embracing the software-defined vehicle era. By consistently updating software and upgrading the underlying architecture, Volkswagen aims to deliver vehicles that not only meet current technological demands but also adapt and improve over time, paving the way for advanced autonomous driving capabilities.
