Vodafone deploys GPON network in 3125 more high-rise buildings

Following the entry of Vodafone into the fixed-line market, Ukraine continues to actively develop Vodafone Gigabit Net home internet services, which is the responsibility of Vega’s team.

Deployment and modernization

In 2023, the operator deployed GPON in 3125 apartment buildings. Residents of more than 411,000 households in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Odesa, Chornomorsk, Vyshneve, Zaporizhzhia and Lviv now have the opportunity to use the Internet using modern technology.

In December last year, the company started construction in Mykolaiv and Ivano-Frankivsk. In total, Vodafone Gigabit Net home internet is available in 5,370 homes – 782,000 households.

The company is not only expanding its coverage, but also modernizing its optical networks with the new technology. More than 80% of FTTB and FTTH infrastructure has been modernized, which is already based on GPON technology.

Subscribers choose GPON

“Users are eagerly choosing GPON. In 2023, the number of subscribers using this technology almost tripled. Thousands of Ukrainians stayed connected during last year’s blackouts and are ready for possible outages at any time thanks to the capabilities of the GPON network,” said Vega CEO Serhii Skrypnikov.

According to him, not only energy efficiency is a reflection of demand. Customers rate GPON almost 10 times better than other technologies for high data transfer speeds and service reliability.

“That is why we consider GPON to be the key technology for the near future and will continue to expand its coverage in Ukraine in all regions of our presence,” Skrypnikov adds.

The company has already invested over UAH 250 million in network resilience. These include investments in the construction of new GPON zones and modernization of FTTx networks, restoration of equipment damaged and destroyed due to hostile invasion, and purchase of batteries, generators and fuel to ensure equipment operability even during possible power outages.
