TikTok is now available again in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in the United States. The app disappeared from the Apple and Google stores on January 19, 2025, when a nationwide ban came into effect for a short time. Although the app was quickly restored after President Donald Trump promised not to enforce the ban, it remained unavailable for download in American app stores.
Now Apple has changed course. Bloomberg reported that the company made this decision after a letter from US Attorney General Pam Bondi. Earlier, Trump instructed the Department of Justice to postpone the ban for 75 days. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment. TikTok is now also officially available on the Google Play Store, after the company urged Android users to download the app using alternative methods. According to Axios, the US Department of Justice has assured Google that restoring access to TikTok will not violate the law.
It is still unclear what will ultimately happen to TikTok in the long run. Trump has repeatedly stated that he wants to strike a “deal” that would allow the company to continue operating in the United States, including arrangements that would give the US government a stake in the company. A number of investors and companies have also offered to take over some aspect of TikTok’s operations, although the company has not indicated which offers it might consider seriously.
