TikTok CEO meets with Trump as platform tries to avoid ban

TikTok CEO Shou Ji Chu will meet with President-elect Donald Trump on Monday as the platform faces a ban in the United States, CNN’s Caitlan Collins reports. The move makes Chu the latest tech executive – after Apple CEO Tim Cook, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg – to meet with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort.

TikTok has already lost in an appeals court fighting the “ban or sell” law, which goes into effect on January 19, and today asked the Supreme Court to intervene.

Although Trump initially initiated the TikTok ban citing national security concerns, he began to reverse course earlier this year. In March, Trump stated that he did not want to ban TikTok because “…without TikTok, you can make Facebook bigger, and I consider Facebook the enemy of the people.” He later joined TikTok in June.

When asked about the TikTok ban during a press conference on Monday, Trump said he would “look into it.” In addition to meeting with Trump, tech giants such as Meta, Amazon, and OpenAI also donated to Trump’s inaugural fund.
