The iPhone 16 series may be available with larger batteries

Apple has filed a new patent that shows they can increase battery capacity without increasing battery size. Recently, Android devices with brand new fast charging technologies and large battery capacities have been appearing, so that batteries with capacities exceeding 5000 mAh are quite common. Apple is also trying to offer higher capacity batteries in its phones.

Apple’s new patent for batteries with higher capacity and the same size

A new Apple patent titled “Batteries with Right Angle Projections” indicates that the capacity of Apple’s new batteries could be increased without increasing the size of the battery. This patent was first filed in September 2021 and published on March 26, 2024. Apple is researching techniques such as membranes and complex battery components to increase battery life.

In addition, the new Apple patent suggests that the battery connector for future iPhones may be something different from what we are used to and different from the usual type of battery. Apple indicates that the achievement of high battery capacity is related to the arrangement of contacts in the battery. Apple explains this as follows:

“While one set of connectors may include protrusions extending from the surface in the first direction, another set of connectors may include protrusions extending from the surface substantially perpendicular to the first direction. This may not only solve the problems of limited space, but may also provide improved resistance across the cell, which may improve battery efficiency.”

As Apple has just published this patent, the new battery technology is not easy to implement in the iPhone 16 series. However, if everything goes as Apple plans, iPhones with bigger batteries may not be far off. Mac Observer also notes that the new battery may appear in the iPhone 16 series.
