Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced the launch of Project Watershed 250 on August 31st. This new initiative aims to bolster the cybersecurity of the state’s water infrastructure.
Addressing Growing Cyber Threats to Water Systems
The launch comes at a critical time, as the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) reported in August observing malicious cyber activity targeting internet-exposed systems of over 100 water and wastewater systems. These attacks, often carried out through PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) directly connected to cellular modules, highlight a significant vulnerability in the sector.
Project Watershed 250 is designed as a collaborative effort, bringing together the capabilities of the U.S. federal government, private sector partners, and state and local expertise. The primary goal is to enhance the protection of water supply systems and other critical infrastructure across Texas.
Free Cybersecurity Resources for Texas Utilities
A key component of Project Watershed 250 is the provision of free cybersecurity defense resources to Texas water and wastewater utilities. These resources will be supplied by private sector partners, significantly lowering the barrier to entry for essential security enhancements. This move is expected to arm local utilities with the tools and knowledge needed to defend against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.
By fostering a partnership between public and private entities, the project seeks to create a more resilient and secure water infrastructure network for the state. This proactive approach is crucial in safeguarding public health and safety, ensuring that essential water services remain uninterrupted in the face of potential cyberattacks.
The initiative underscores the growing recognition of the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to cyber threats and the importance of robust security measures. Project Watershed 250 represents Texas’s commitment to staying ahead of these evolving risks and ensuring the continued reliability of its vital water systems.
