The World Ultra High Definition Video Industry Alliance (UWA Alliance) has officially announced the open-source release of the reference tools for its Spatial Vivid 1.0 standard. This marks a significant step in making the industry’s first six-degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) 3D spatial imaging format widely accessible, moving the Spatial Vivid ecosystem into a new phase of application development.

Open Source Release for Spatial Imaging Standard

During the main forum of the 2026 UWA SUMMIT held in Shenzhen from October 21st to 24th, the UWA Alliance revealed that the Spatial Vivid 1.0 standard reference tools are now available to global developers under the MIT open-source license. This comprehensive suite includes an EGSC codec tool, a web renderer tool, and packaging/unpackaging tools, offering a complete end-to-end reference implementation.

The core innovation lies in its ability to achieve an average compression ratio of 20x for 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) scenes, enabling fast rendering across multiple devices. This is crucial for the large-scale adoption and practical implementation of 3DGS spatial imagery, providing a standardized foundation.

Spatial Vivid 1.0: The Standard and Its Tools

Spatial Vivid 1.0 is primarily based on the UWA Alliance’s standard, “T/UWA 050-2026: Three-dimensional Image Format Supporting Six Degrees of Freedom Interaction.” The newly open-sourced reference toolset is designed to support this standard comprehensively. It features:

  • EGSC 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) Codec: For efficient encoding and decoding of 3DGS data.
  • Format Processing Toolkit: Tools for managing and processing the spatial imaging format.
  • Browser-based Web Viewer: A component for interactive display of spatial content directly in web browsers.

These tools provide developers with everything needed for the workflow, from compressing 3D assets and media packaging to interactive presentation. This integrated approach aims to significantly lower the barrier to entry for developers looking to create and deploy spatial imaging experiences.

Performance and Compatibility Verified Across Devices

The Web Viewer tool has undergone extensive compatibility and performance testing on a range of devices, including smartphones and tablets from major brands such as Huawei, Honor, vivo, OPPO, Xiaomi, and Apple. The tests confirm that the viewer can be accessed through system browsers or the built-in browsers within applications like WeChat.

In evaluations covering seven different devices and using scenes with approximately 1.05 million and 1.4 million Gaussian spheres, the file loading times consistently remained under 0.9 seconds across all configurations. Notably, some mobile devices achieved loading times under 0.3 seconds. The rendering frame rates consistently exceeded 45 FPS, with certain configurations reaching up to 120 FPS, indicating robust performance even with complex scenes.

The Web Viewer can directly load GLB files generated by the toolkit. Combined with the open-source code and documentation, this empowers developers to rapidly validate their applications, from asset processing to browser-based display.

This open-source release is expected to foster a vibrant ecosystem around the Spatial Vivid standard, encouraging innovation and collaboration among developers worldwide. By providing these essential tools freely, the UWA Alliance is paving the way for the widespread adoption of immersive 6DoF spatial imaging technologies.
