Sony’s PS5 IP Drought: Only 4 New Franchises, 2 Already Cancelled

Sony’s PlayStation brand is facing increasing scrutiny from players, with a series of recent decisions sparking controversy and leading to a decline in player confidence. Beyond the shift away from physical media for some first-party games and the reported halting of Hideo Kojima’s ‘Physint’ project, a deeper issue is emerging within the PlayStation ecosystem: a significant lack of new intellectual property (IP) on the current-generation console.

A Stark Contrast to PS4’s Success

A recent discussion on the ResetEra forums highlighted a concerning trend. Nearly six years into the PlayStation 5 (PS5) console cycle, Sony has launched only four entirely new game series. This stands in stark contrast to the PlayStation 4 (PS4) era, which saw the birth of 21 original IPs throughout its lifespan. This scarcity of fresh, first-party franchises is fueling player dissatisfaction.

PS5’s New IP Lineup: A Troubled Start

The four new IPs introduced for the PS5 generation, as identified in the forum discussion, are:

  • Returnal
  • Saros (noted as a spiritual successor)
  • Concord
  • Destruction AllStars

However, the situation is further compounded by the performance of these titles. Both Concord and Destruction AllStars have reportedly been shelved by Sony due to poor market reception. This decision significantly reduces the number of truly novel franchises Sony has brought to the PS5.

Concerns Over Gameplay Similarity and Future Projects

Adding to the community’s concerns, it’s noted that Returnal and Saros share core gameplay mechanics, lacking distinct differentiation. This perceived lack of innovation in new series further exacerbates player frustration, with many feeling Sony is not delivering fresh and exciting original content.

While Sony has announced plans for future new IPs, including Intergalactic and Fairgames, the outlook remains uncertain. There are existing worries that Fairgames might also face cancellation, reportedly due to negative internal playtest feedback and a challenging development process.

A Call for Strategic Adjustment

It remains unclear if Sony has any unannounced new IPs in development for the remaining PS5 lifecycle. However, the prevailing sentiment among the player base is that a significant strategic shift is necessary if Sony hopes to regain the trust and interest of millions of disillusioned gamers. The company’s future success may hinge on its ability to revitalize its approach to game development and introduce compelling new worlds and experiences to its dedicated audience.
