Sony’s premium DualSense Edge controller for PlayStation 5 and PC might be getting a refresh. Filings with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) suggest a new version of the pro-grade controller is in the works.

New Model Number Revealed

The FCC documents reveal a new model number, CFI-ZCP2, which follows the current CFI-ZCP1. While a new model number often signifies significant changes, current speculation points towards a more focused upgrade for the CFI-ZCP2.

Easier Battery Access Likely Focus

The primary anticipated change for the new DualSense Edge is an improved design for accessing and replacing the internal rechargeable lithium-ion battery. This modification is widely believed to be a proactive step by Sony to comply with upcoming European Union regulations concerning the “right to repair.”

EU “Right to Repair” Mandate

The EU’s forthcoming legislation requires manufacturers of consumer electronics to allow users to replace rechargeable batteries themselves, rather than mandating a return to the manufacturer for battery service. This regulation aims to enhance product longevity and reduce electronic waste.

This regulatory push has already influenced design choices in the gaming industry. Notable examples include the anticipated redesigns of hardware like the Nintendo Switch 2 and various associated accessories, all gearing up to meet the new standards.

Timeline Aligns with EU Law

The EU regulation is set to take effect in 2027, and interestingly, this appears to align with the potential release window for the updated DualSense Edge. Some documents on the FCC website are currently under an embargo, scheduled for release only in late January 2027. This suggests that Sony may choose to officially unveil the revised controller around that time.

These embargoed documents are reported to include updated product designs and user manuals, although they remain inaccessible to the public for now. If confirmed, this would mark the first hardware revision for the DualSense Edge since its initial launch in early 2023. Given the FCC filing’s timeline, more information about this refreshed professional controller could emerge from Sony in the near future.
