Solidigm, a NAND flash memory manufacturer owned by SK Hynix, is reportedly set to establish a significant new semiconductor manufacturing facility in the United States. According to a report by the Korean publication ‘Seoul Economic Daily’, the company has largely settled on the Marcy Nanocenter in Marcy, New York, as the location for its ambitious new wafer fabrication plant.

A Glimpse at the Marcy Nanocenter

The Marcy Nanocenter is a substantial site, spanning approximately 1.756 million square meters and forming part of the State University of New York (SUNY) Polytechnic Institute’s Marcy campus. This location is no stranger to advanced manufacturing, already hosting companies like Wolfspeed, a manufacturer of power semiconductors. The site currently offers around 514,000 square meters of available land, which is ample space for constructing an additional 93,000 square meters of cleanroom facilities.

Project Scale and Investment

Sources familiar with the matter indicate that Solidigm’s plan involves an initial phase to construct a NAND factory with a monthly production capacity of approximately 100,000 wafers, each 12 inches in diameter. Following this, a second wafer fab is planned for construction at the same location. The investment for each of these fabs is estimated to be in the range of $40 billion to $50 billion, bringing the total projected investment for the entire project to a staggering $100 billion.

Negotiations regarding the specific investment terms are currently underway among the involved parties. The scale of this potential investment underscores a major commitment by Solidigm and SK Hynix to bolster US semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.

Strategic Implications

While the details are still being finalized, the selection of New York for such a colossal semiconductor project highlights the state’s efforts to attract high-tech industries and create jobs. The presence of existing semiconductor-related infrastructure and academic partnerships at the SUNY Polytechnic Institute likely played a crucial role in Solidigm’s decision-making process.

A $100 billion investment in a new NAND fabrication plant represents a significant expansion of Solidigm’s global manufacturing footprint and a strategic move to increase its market share in the highly competitive NAND flash memory sector. This development could also have ripple effects throughout the US technology supply chain, potentially spurring further investment and innovation in related fields.

The semiconductor industry has been a focal point for geopolitical and economic discussions worldwide, with many nations seeking to enhance their domestic production capacity. Solidigm’s planned facility in New York could be a major step in that direction for the United States.
