Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke sent a memo to employees stating that before asking for more staff or resources, teams should show why they “can’t do what they want using AI,” according to CNBC.
“What would the field look like if autonomous AI agents were already part of the team? This question could lead to some really interesting discussions and projects,” Lutke wrote in a note he posted on X. According to CNBC, the note was sent late last month.
The memo states that the “reflective use of AI” is a “core expectation” of the company. In it, Lütke says that AI has become “the fastest change in how work gets done that I’ve seen in my career” and that “using AI effectively is a skill that needs to be carefully learned…by using it a lot.”
According to Lütke, the effective use of AI “is now a core expectation of everyone at Shopify.” Questions about the use of AI will also be added to “our performance and peer review questionnaire.”
“To succeed, we need our collective skills and ambition to apply our craft, multiplied by artificial intelligence, for the benefit of our sellers,” says Luetke.
