Samsung's next foldable phone may be more interesting

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series has been the leader in foldable phones for some time, but lately it seems that competitors are catching up. Rumor has it that the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6 could be a major shock and reclaim the folding phone crown.

While the current Z Fold 5 model enjoys a good reputation, it lacks the wow factor of some of its foldable competitors. But Samsung seems to be taking notes. A recent patent suggests that they are ditching the “fat phone” look in favor of a thinner profile, but not at the expense of usability. Perhaps they realized that ultra-tall foldable phones are not everyone’s cup of tea.

Instead, rumors point to a wider device with larger internal and external screens. This wider design could also mean a different aspect ratio, so that the phone doesn’t look like a tall, narrow tablet when unfolded.

Samsung may also offer a new multi-body hinge design that distributes pressure more evenly across the screen and potentially reduces creases on the inner screen. The patent also shows a new camera layout with modules directly on the back, but it’s unclear if this reflects actual plans.

While the final design may vary, it is likely that the Z Fold 6 will be thinner and wider. In addition, recent reports suggest that Samsung is considering developing a more affordable version of the Z Fold 6.

The decision to launch the low-cost Galaxy Z Fold is expected to increase Samsung’s market share in the folding smartphone segment in China. The South Korean brand currently ranks third with a 19% share, behind Huawei and Honor, which dominate the market.

The budget-friendly Galaxy Z Fold is expected to debut in the second half of 2024, likely alongside the next-generation Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 at Samsung’s upcoming Samsung Unpacked event in August. Thus, Samsung may release three foldable devices for the first time in the history of foldable devices.
