The Galaxy Z Flip 7 could have a cover screen very similar to the Razr Ultra, according to animation files unearthed by Android Authority from a leaked version of One UI 8. Until now, the biggest difference between Samsung’s foldable phones and the Razr was that the Razr offered an edge-to-edge cover screen, with no notch like Samsung‘s Galaxy Z Flip 6.
Images found by Android Authority show that the screen wraps around the Galaxy Z Flip 7’s two rear cameras instead of nestling them in a display-less notch. This seems to confirm the renders shared by Android Headlines of the Galaxy Z Flip 7 in March. Samsung takes a very conservative approach to annual Flip updates, so a cover screen replacement would be significant. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 looks almost identical to the Galaxy Z Flip 5.
Changing the front screen would also be a fairly obvious example of Samsung trying to catch up with Motorola, which has long offered a larger and more useful cover screen on the Razr. The entry-level Moto Razr of 2023 had only a small piece of cover screen, but since then, all of the company’s foldable smartphones have a cover that can run full Android apps.
Aside from the visual changes, how significant the Galaxy Z Flip 7 with a larger cover screen will be will depend on what Samsung allows you to do with it. So far, the company has limited the screen to serving as a tool for checking notifications and using selected apps. To do anything else, you have to download additional programs and fiddle with the settings.
We’ll have to wait until the summer, when Samsung usually announces new Galaxy Z Flips and Folds, to find out more, but it certainly seems like this year’s updates could be much more than a few new colors.
