Samsung is developing a much thinner folding phone than the world's thinnest Honor Magic V3

Samsung, the pioneer of mass-market foldable smartphones, is clearly facing challenges in maintaining its leadership in this area. The recently released Galaxy Z Fold 6, for example, offers little more than an incremental upgrade.

Meanwhile, Chinese manufacturers are constantly innovating their foldable smartphones, whether in terms of features or physical design. For example, the recently released Honor Magic V3 has a slim form factor that measures just 9.2 mm when folded, making it the thinnest foldable smartphone to date. In comparison, the Z Fold 6 is 12.1 mm thick, which is 2.9 mm thicker than the Honor device.

But Samsung seems determined to regain its dominance in this market. According to a report from Naver, Samsung is working on a foldable phone that will be only 7 mm thick when closed.

If the company manages to do this, it will be an incredibly thin folding phone that will easily surpass the Honor Magic V3 in thickness. But that’s easier said than done. To achieve such a slim size, the company will have to make serious compromises, such as sacrificing S Pen support and reducing battery capacity.

This is not the first time we have heard about a thin foldable device from Samsung. There are reports of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim being developed. It is unclear if the rumored 7mm-thick device is the same model as this one or if it is a separate iteration.

In addition to the physical size, the report says that Samsung is also looking for unique features that would differentiate its foldable devices from traditional smartphones. However, specific details about these features are not yet available.

As the foldable smartphone market becomes increasingly competitive, Samsung’s ability to innovate and create attractive devices will be crucial to maintaining leadership in this new category. We look forward to seeing what the company has in store for us.
