Robert Downey Jr. said he will instruct his lawyers to sue future executives who try to create digital copies of him using artificial intelligence.
Speaking on the On With Kara Swisher podcast, he said: “I’d like to state here that I intend to sue all future CEOs, just to order.” Swisher suggested that he would be dead by then, to which Downey Jr. replied: “But my law firm will still be very active.”
In 2019, Downey Jr. announced that he had invested in the FootPrint Coalition, an organization that aims to use robotics and artificial intelligence to reduce the human carbon footprint. He also sits on the board of directors of an organization that uses artificial intelligence to strengthen cybersecurity.
Speaking on the podcast, he tried to draw a line between his investments and the use of AI in Hollywood: “It always comes down not to the technology or the ability to line your pockets, but to the question, ‘Who are the people doing this?
The actor, who won an Oscar earlier this year for his role as Oppenheimer in the movie about the invention of the atomic bomb, said the world of artificial intelligence and deep learning is not something he usually thinks about “because I have a real emotional life that has no room for that.”
He went on to say that he has so much faith in those behind Marvel movies that he doubts the company would ever try to recreate him on screen without his permission.
