In a surprising development for emulation enthusiasts, a developer has successfully ported a PlayStation 5 emulator to the Xbox Series X, allowing for the experimental execution of PS5 games on Microsoft’s console.
PS5 Emulation Surges Forward
The past few months have witnessed remarkable progress in the realm of PS5 emulation. Projects like SharpEmu and KyTy have showcased significant achievements, with KyTy notably managing to boot Demon’s Souls: Remake on PC. Impressively, the frame rate for this title saw a rapid improvement from a mere 1 FPS to a playable 30 FPS within a week of development.
KyTy’s capabilities extend further, with the emulator also demonstrating the ability to run Grand Theft Auto 5 on PC, achieving a commendable 40 FPS in the open-world title. The competitive landscape for PS5 emulators on PC is heating up, and now, an unexpected twist has emerged.
PS5X Emulator Brings PS5 Games to Xbox Series X
Developer Devran Cosmo Uenal, a YouTuber, has utilized his experimental project, dubbed PS5X, to run PS5 games on an Xbox Series X console. Uenal achieved this by porting the KyTy PS5 emulator to the developer mode of Microsoft’s current-generation hardware. Early versions of this port have already demonstrated the ability to run PS5 homebrew applications and backup game files.
The current lineup of PS5 games confirmed to be running on the Xbox Series X via the PS5X emulator includes titles like GEX Trilogy, Hellboy: Web of World, Marvel’s Avengers: Invasions, and Quake II. Uenal provided a specific demonstration focusing on Quake II to showcase the emulator’s real-world performance.
Early Stages, Promising Future
It’s crucial to note that the PS5X emulator is in its very nascent stages of development. Game compatibility is presently limited, and as indicated in the video description, substantial development work remains. However, the fact that some PS5 games are already fully playable on the Xbox Series X, with support for audio output and controller input, is a significant milestone.
Given the rapid pace of development in the PS5 emulation scene, with even SharpEmu successfully booting titles like Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord on PC, the potential for PS5X is considerable. At this rate, it may not be long before the emulator could potentially run some PlayStation exclusive titles on Xbox Series X hardware.
