The gaming company previously announced its plans to rebrand the Origin app for desktop players back in 2020 and started releasing the new EA app in 2022. However, Origin will be completely shut down on April 17, 2025, when Microsoft will stop supporting 32-bit software. Anyone still using Origin will need to switch to the EA app before that date.
For those PC players who have not yet switched to the EA app, the company has a FAQ explaining the latest system requirements. The EA app runs on a 64-bit architecture and requires a Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer (although Microsoft would like to see everyone upgrade to Windows 11 as support for the previous OS is ending).
If you simply download the EA app to your current computer, players won’t need to re-download their games. And if you have cloud storage enabled, all your data will be transferred without any additional steps. However, it’s always a good idea to have physical backups in case of such a migration, especially since not all games support cloud saving, and in such games you will need to transfer your saved data manually. Mods may also not automatically transfer data, so EA recommends that players consult with mod creators about transferring to the EA app.
