OpenAI may soon launch Sora, its text-to-video model

OpenAI will start announcing new features and demos tomorrow for 12 days via live streams. These new products will supposedly include OpenAI’s long-awaited text-to-video tool Sora and a new reasoning model.

The announcement of “12 Days of OpenAI,” as the company calls it, was made public yesterday on X. The first live stream will take place tomorrow, but the announcements themselves remain unconfirmed. However, in addition to the sources who recently spoke to The Verge, the Wall Street Journal previously reported that Sora is likely to be released by the end of 2024.

Sora was revealed earlier this year and is available to a small group of testers. But about 20 of them have made the model publicly available to protest “unpaid labor,” according to The Washington Post. OpenAI has been widely criticized for the origin of the data supporting its language models, and Sora is no exception. The company has yet to respond directly to whether Sora has pulled public videos from YouTube, which YouTube’s CEO says would be a violation of the platform’s terms of service.

OpenAI is not the only company working on text-to-video models. Google’s Veo is now available to Google Vertex AI users through a private review. This was announced three months after Sora’s February presentation.
