OpenAI is making GPT-4.1, the latest addition to its collection of artificial intelligence models, available to all paid users. The rollout to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users begins today, while Enterprise and Edu subscriptions will have to wait a few weeks to gain access. Once GPT-4.1 becomes available, it can be selected from the “other models” drop-down menu in the model selection window.
This version of the ChatGPT AI chatbot appeared in the company’s developer API last month, offering speed and efficiency improvements over the GPT-4.5 model it replaced (yes, it’s a bit of a confusing numbering system). OpenAI has been iterating models at breakneck speed this year; GPT-4.5 debuted in February, and the new version is already outpacing it statistically.
The company also has a GPT-4.1 mini variant that will replace the current small GPT-4o mini model. This upgrade will happen for all tiers, including free. The GPT-4.1 mini will be a fallback option for free users when they reach their access limit for the heavier GPT-4o model.
