Nvidia plans to release a new artificial intelligence chip

Nvidia seems determined to find a way to sell artificial intelligence chips in China despite US export restrictions.

The semiconductor giant is planning to release an AI chip specifically for the Chinese market in September, as first reported by the Financial Times.

This AI chip will be based on Nvidia’s Blackwell RTX Pro 6000 processor, which has already been modified to meet existing restrictions on AI chips, the Financial Times adds. These chips will not include high-speed memory or NVLink, Nvidia’s high-speed, low-latency communication interface, which are features of the company’s advanced AI chips.

Last month, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said that the company would no longer include the Chinese market in its revenue and profit forecasts. This may be a short-term change.

The Nvidia representative added: “Under the current export control environment, we have effectively left the Chinese data center market, which is now only served by competitors like Huawei. China has one of the largest groups of developers in the world who create open source models and non-military applications used around the world. While security is paramount, each of these programs should run best on the U.S. AI stack.”
