Nvidia has officially responded to widespread rumors suggesting the discontinuation of its high-end GeForce RTX 5090 graphics card. Jeff Fisher, Nvidia’s Senior Vice President of the Personal Computing business, clarified the situation during a recent RTX Spark event in Taipei. He firmly stated that reports of the RTX 5090 being discontinued are untrue.

Fisher emphasized that the RTX 5090 remains a crucial core product for Nvidia and that the company will continue to supply it. However, he acknowledged that the current supply chain capacity is indeed limited. Nvidia is actively working to increase product availability and bring more units to market.

These rumors gained traction earlier in October, with reports from sources like MEGAsizeGPU (@Zed__Wang) on October 10th. These claims suggested that Nvidia would cease allocating the GB202 chip for the GeForce RTX 50 series gaming graphics cards, redirecting the chips instead to RTX PRO professional cards. Further speculation indicated that Nvidia might introduce an RTX 5080 variant with 24GB of VRAM to fill a perceived gap in the high-end gaming graphics card market. At the time, these claims lacked official confirmation from Nvidia.

Recent market observations also fueled the speculation surrounding the RTX 5090’s availability. Tom’s Hardware previously reported that the US retailer Micro Center had marked the graphics card as “Not Carried.” Additionally, some retail channels experienced stock shortages for the product, making it difficult for consumers to purchase.

However, Fisher’s statement directly refutes the notion of the card being officially discontinued. He pointed out that scarcity in retail channels does not equate to an official end-of-production announcement from the manufacturer.

Fisher also underscored the fundamental importance of the gaming business to Nvidia’s overall success. He stated, “Without the gaming business and GeForce, there would be no Nvidia today.” He further elaborated that the GeForce brand has been instrumental in driving the development of CUDA. The parallel computing platform and GPU computing capabilities powered by CUDA have, in turn, laid the essential groundwork for the current growth and evolution of the AI market.

The clarification from Nvidia aims to quell market uncertainty and reassure gamers and industry partners about the continued availability of the RTX 5090, despite acknowledged supply chain constraints. The company’s focus remains on balancing production with the high demand for its cutting-edge graphics technology.
