Vodafone Ukraine has asked the regulator to allocate additional frequencies in the 2.6 GHz band to provide 4G mobile services. It was joined by Kyivstar and lifecell. They also applied for additional frequencies for 3G communications.
After studying the requests of the big three Ukrainian mobile operators, the National Commission for the State Regulation of Electronic Communications, Radio Frequency Spectrum and Postal Services (NCEC) decided to provide new frequencies only on the basis of a tender or auction.
“…Taking into account the fact that the declared need for radio frequency spectrum exceeds its actual availability, we inform you that in accordance with part one of Article 59 of the Law of Ukraine “On Electronic Communications”, radio frequency spectrum in the radio frequency band 2575-2610 MHz for cellular radio communications will be provided exclusively on the basis of a tender or auction,” the decision of the NCEC reads.
Prior to that, the Commission made similar decisions regarding the radio frequency bands 1935-1950/2125-2140 MHz and 2355-2395 MHz.
