NASA has successfully conducted a crucial test of its RS-25 engine, a vital component for launching astronauts to the Moon under the Artemis program. The developmental engine was put through its paces for nearly eight-and-a-half minutes at NASA’s Stennis Space Center, simulating the duration it will operate during an actual Artemis mission. This rigorous test is a significant step in ensuring the reliability and performance of the engines that will power humanity’s return to the lunar surface.

Hot Fire Success and Key Objectives

The test involved RS-25 engine No. 10001, which roared to life on the Fred Haise Test Stand. Beyond its extended firing duration, the engine was also pushed to 111% power, replicating the thrust levels required for new production engines. The primary goals of this hot fire were to perform an acceptance test on critical flight components destined for future Artemis missions and to validate a new thermal protection system designed to shield the engine nozzle from the intense heat experienced during the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket’s ascent. While this particular developmental engine won’t fly, the data gathered is invaluable for refining engine performance and reliability, with the support of prime contractor L3Harris Technologies.

Powering the Artemis Journey

The RS-25 engines are the workhorses of NASA’s SLS rocket, with four of them generating a combined thrust of up to 2 million pounds. This immense power is essential for lifting the SLS rocket and the Orion spacecraft, carrying astronauts and equipment, into orbit on their journey to the Moon. All RS-25 engines undergo thorough testing and are certified flightworthy at NASA Stennis before their use in space missions. The collaborative testing effort involves skilled operators from NASA, L3Harris, and Nova Space Solutions, underscoring the complex teamwork required for these ambitious endeavors.
