MINISFORUM has officially launched its MS-01 SE Mini Workstation, now available for purchase on e-commerce platforms. This new model enters the market with a competitive price point of 6,399 Yuan for a complete configuration featuring an Intel Core i5-12600H processor, 32GB of DDR4 RAM, and a 1TB SSD.
While the MS-01 SE shares a similar overall design with its predecessor, the original MS-01, there are several notable adjustments and downgrades in its specifications. The internal PCIe Gen4 slot has been reduced to support only 4 lanes. Furthermore, the rear panel sees a change where the two 10GbE SFP+ ports have been replaced by USB-A 480Mbps ports. The wireless connectivity has also been updated, now utilizing a MediaTek MT7902 module, which supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2.
Internal Storage and Connectivity
Despite the modifications, the MS-01 SE is equipped to handle storage needs with three M.2 2280 drive bays. These bays offer support for different PCIe generations and lane configurations: one slot supports PCIe Gen4 ×4, while the other two support PCIe Gen3 ×4 and PCIe Gen3 ×2, respectively. In terms of external connectivity, the workstation provides ample I/O options, including two USB-C ports with a 40Gbps transfer speed and two 2.5GbE RJ-45 Ethernet ports.
The MS-01 SE also meets the Intel vPro platform requirements, suggesting it’s designed for business and professional use cases where manageability and security are key considerations. This positioning aligns with the ‘workstation’ designation, indicating a focus on performance and reliability for demanding tasks.
Market Positioning and Value Proposition
The introduction of the MS-01 SE at 6,399 Yuan positions it as an accessible option for users seeking a compact yet powerful computing solution. The inclusion of the 12th Gen Intel Core i5 processor, a substantial 32GB of RAM, and a fast 1TB SSD provides a robust foundation for multitasking, content creation, and various professional applications. While the specific compromises made in the SE version cater to a more budget-conscious segment, the core performance aspects remain strong.
MINISFORUM continues to expand its range of mini PCs and workstations, catering to diverse user needs from home entertainment to professional environments. The MS-01 SE appears to be a strategic move to offer a capable machine with a focus on core processing and storage, while making concessions on high-speed networking ports in favor of cost-effectiveness. This makes it an interesting option for small businesses, developers, or power users who prioritize internal component performance over specific external connectivity features.
