Meta is splitting its artificial intelligence department into two new teams, according to an Axios report. From now on, the company’s AI staff will be distributed between the AI products team or the AGI Foundations division. No jobs will be cut.
The AI Product Development team will focus on consumer-facing work, such as AI features on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, as well as a new standalone AI app called Meta.
The AGI Foundations division will focus on larger-scale projects, such as improving Llama models.
While companies such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic are taking steps forward, Meta is doing its best to keep up with the competition. The company recently launched the Llama for Startups program to encourage early-stage companies to use their products for generative AI applications. Meanwhile, a large part of the Meta LlamaCon event in April was aimed at showing that it can compete with OpenAI.
