Meta has announced a groundbreaking initiative to construct the world’s first petabit-class transoceanic subsea fiber optic cable, named Petal. This ambitious project marks a significant leap in global internet infrastructure, as it will also be the first subsea cable to feature large-scale deployment of multi-core fiber technology.

A New Era of Connectivity

The Petal cable will span the Atlantic Ocean, connecting France and the United States over a distance of approximately 7,000 kilometers. Its projected transmission bandwidth is set to reach an unprecedented 1 Petabit per second (Pbps), which is equivalent to 1,000 Terabits per second (Tbps). This capacity is double that of the most advanced subsea cables currently operating over similar transoceanic distances.

To put this immense bandwidth into perspective, Meta stated that it would be sufficient to simultaneously support the network capacity required for 75% of the global population to stream music online at the same time. This highlights the transformative potential of Petal for global internet services, cloud computing, and data-intensive applications.

Collaborative Development

The development of the Petal cable is a collaborative effort. Meta is partnering with two leading Japanese companies: NEC, a global leader in IT and network solutions, and Sumitomo Electric Industries, a prominent manufacturer of optical fibers and cables. This collaboration brings together expertise in cutting-edge cable technology and network deployment.

Furthermore, the French telecommunications operator Orange will provide comprehensive support for the cable’s landing in France, ensuring seamless integration with terrestrial networks. This partnership underscores the importance of international cooperation in building the digital highways of the future.

Timeline and Impact

The Petal project is expected to be commercially operational by 2029. Once deployed, it will significantly enhance the speed, reliability, and capacity of internet traffic between North America and Europe. This upgrade is crucial for meeting the ever-growing demand for data, driven by the proliferation of video streaming, online gaming, virtual reality, and AI-powered services.

The adoption of multi-core fiber technology in Petal is particularly noteworthy. This innovative approach allows multiple optical signals to travel simultaneously through different cores within a single fiber strand, dramatically increasing the data-carrying capacity compared to traditional single-core fibers. This technology is seen as a key enabler for future terabit-speed networks.

Meta’s investment in this next-generation subsea cable infrastructure reflects its commitment to building a more robust and capable metaverse and supporting its vast array of digital services. The Petal cable is poised to become a critical piece of the global internet backbone, facilitating faster and more reliable connections for billions of users worldwide.
