The highly anticipated ‘Guangdong Yachts Southbound’ initiative celebrated its inaugural voyage today, marking a significant milestone for yacht tourism between mainland China and Hong Kong. The ceremony took place at the Yacht Club in Lantau Island, where five yachts successfully docked after departing from Zhuhai, Nansha, and Shenzhen.

A New Era for Yacht Tourism

The participating yachts, identified as “Shenwei 70”, “Yunxun”, “Shenhangyun No. 2”, “Shenhangyun No. 8”, and “Bailimeishang”, represented the first wave of this new cross-border tourism program. The “Shenwei 70” proudly displayed a red banner reading “Guangdong Yachts Southbound Inaugural Voyage”, symbolizing the start of this exciting venture.

Economic Potential and Future Development

Speaking on the development, Chu Lap-wai, a legislative councilor representing the Election Committee constituency, expressed optimism about the initiative’s potential to boost Hong Kong’s economy. He noted that while current berthing and supply facilities are adequate for the initial influx of yachts, long-term planning is crucial for sustained growth. Chu suggested that Hong Kong needs to establish normalized support services and introduce curated tourism packages, such as island-hopping tours and “chartered day trips”, to leverage regional characteristics and major events.

“Integrating yacht tourism with local culture and large-scale events can significantly drive Hong Kong’s economic development,” Chu stated. He emphasized the importance of a coordinated approach involving the government and the private sector.

Industry Preparedness and Government Support

The local yacht industry is reportedly actively engaged in discussions and preparations to support this new tourism stream. The yacht repair services in the Ap Lei Chau area, known for their high-end capabilities and comprehensive parts supply, are currently in a watchful stance. Chu highlighted the government’s role in facilitating this growth, suggesting targeted policy support and promotional campaigns to attract high-spending yacht owners to Hong Kong.

“Attracting premium yacht visitors to Hong Kong can stimulate the entire industry chain,” Chu added, emphasizing the need for strategic government intervention.

Enhancing the Tourist Experience

To maximize the economic benefits of yacht tourism, Chu recommended that the tourism industry, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Tourism Board, develop targeted promotional strategies. He proposed integrating Hong Kong’s unique outlying island and geopark resources into itinerary planning. Routes could include island-hopping excursions to popular destinations like Tai O, Lamma Island, and Cheung Chau.

Chu envisions a holistic tourist experience where visitors can enjoy natural scenery and local delicacies during the day, followed by shopping and dining in bustling commercial districts like Central and Causeway Bay in the evening. Linking yacht tourism with major government-organized events is also seen as a key strategy to draw in visitors.

Tailored Services for High-Value Tourists

Furthermore, Chu suggested drawing inspiration from international best practices by offering “chartered day trips” with dedicated guides, specifically designed for yacht tourists. Seamless land transportation connections are essential to complement these services. This approach aims to attract tourists with significant spending power, injecting new momentum into the local economy.

The successful maiden voyage of the ‘Guangdong Yachts Southbound’ initiative is expected to pave the way for a new chapter in Hong Kong’s tourism landscape, fostering greater connectivity and economic opportunities within the Greater Bay Area and beyond.
