Following Microsoft’s recent announcement to phase out its desktop publishing software, Microsoft Publisher, the open-source office suite LibreOffice has stepped in to offer a solution for affected users. The Document Foundation, the organization behind LibreOffice, confirmed that its suite offers full compatibility with the .pub file format.

Publisher’s Farewell, LibreOffice’s Welcome

Microsoft Publisher, which has been in service for approximately 35 years since its initial release in 1991, is being retired. This move means some users may no longer be able to open their legacy .pub files within Microsoft 365. The end-of-support date for Publisher is October 2026.

Concerns have been raised regarding the potential loss of historical .pub files and the inability to edit them. In response, LibreOffice has officially announced that its built-in component, LibreOffice Draw, possesses mature capabilities for parsing .pub files. This means users can freely open, view, and edit documents in this format using LibreOffice.

Preserving Digital Assets with Open Source

LibreOffice Draw not only allows users to work with their existing .pub files but also supports conversion to the Open Document Format (ODF) or other common file types. This capability is crucial for ensuring the longevity and accessibility of digital assets that might otherwise become obsolete due to format obsolescence.

The Document Foundation highlighted the unique value of open-source software in safeguarding digital heritage. By providing a free and seamless migration path, LibreOffice empowers users to maintain access to and edit their past work without the risk of format abandonment.

This move not only protects users’ digital assets from the risk of format obsolescence but also highlights the unique value of open-source software in preserving digital heritage, offering users a free, seamless migration solution.

The decision by Microsoft to discontinue Publisher, while understandable from a product lifecycle perspective, has left a void for users who rely on its specific functionalities or have a substantial library of .pub files. LibreOffice’s proactive support for this legacy format demonstrates a commitment to user choice and data preservation that is highly valued in the open-source community and beyond.

For individuals and organizations with extensive archives of Publisher documents, the transition to LibreOffice Draw presents a practical and cost-effective alternative. It ensures that decades of work remain accessible and editable, reinforcing the principle of open standards and interoperability.
