LG Electronics has unveiled its artificial intelligence home robot hub and open source software development kit (SDK) at ROSCon 2024, which took place on October 21-23 in Odense, Denmark. The event provided the company with an opportunity to interact with the global developer community, share its technological expertise, and explore new ways to expand the open platform ecosystem.
Now in its 13th year, ROSCon brings together robot operating system (ROS) developers – both beginners and experts – to share their experiences and present their latest technologies, innovations, and ideas. LG’s booth featured SDKs and application programming interfaces (APIs), as well as step-by-step instructions on how to create ready-made applications using the API Tool. The company demonstrated the main functions and services of the smart robot hub, including the ability to maintain a conversation, tell a story, or read using the face and voice recognition (OCR) function. In addition, a demonstration session was held where developers could create applications for this hub using an open SDK.
The SDK provides developers with easy access to various open interfaces (OPEN APIs) and application programming tools, allowing them to gain more control over the smart home robot hub and easily expand its software capabilities through ROS 2 and SDKs that support standardized interfaces. The SDK is now available on LG’s developer site(q9.developer.lge.com), which also hosts a community communication platform and an app marketplace where developers can download apps created by other users.
LG is also actively looking for partners among institutions and companies for cooperation based on the SDK. The company provides engineering samples for advanced joint development projects and concludes memorandums of understanding (MoUs). With the available programming tools, LG aims to maximize the potential of the AI home robot hub and expand the ecosystem as an open platform.
Baek Seung-min, Head of LG’s Advanced Robotics Laboratory (CTO Division), made a presentation during the ROSCon 2024 Talk session on October 23. It was devoted to the software architecture and performance optimization methods of the SDK for LG’s smart home robot hub based on ROS 2. LG will also invite ROS developers to join the growing ecosystem by releasing its SDK, which will facilitate collaboration with customers in product development.
“The introduction of the SDK for the autonomous home robot hub with artificial intelligence demonstrates our vision of expanding the ecosystem of operating system-based home appliances with downloadable services that allow users to personalize their appliances,” said Hyang-eun Lee, head of customer experience innovation at LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution. – “This is the latest stage in our mission to expand the OS-based home appliance ecosystem and propel the industry into a new era of smart home appliances.
