LG Electronics has announced significant investments to bolster its Artificial Intelligence Data Center (AIDC) cooling solutions, with plans for a new factory in the United States and expanded production capacity at its South Korean facilities. The company is committing a total of 150 billion Korean Won (approximately 744 million RMB) to these strategic expansions.
New US Facility to Boost North American Capacity
The centerpiece of this expansion is a new AIDC chiller plant factory to be constructed in Windsor, Virginia. This facility will be LG Electronics’ third global AIDC chiller plant. Spanning an impressive 170,000 square meters with a building area of 30,000 square meters, the new plant will focus on producing air-cooled AIDC chiller units. Production is slated to commence in the second half of 2027.
This strategic move aims to localize chiller production within North America. By establishing a local manufacturing presence, LG Electronics intends to achieve greater flexibility and responsiveness to meet the growing demands of its customers in the region. This localization is crucial as the demand for high-performance cooling solutions for data centers, particularly those supporting AI workloads, continues to surge.
South Korean Plants to Increase Output
In parallel with the US expansion, LG Electronics is also enhancing the production capacity of its two existing factories in South Korea: the Pyeongtaek plant and the Changwon plant. These upgrades will further strengthen LG’s global supply chain for AIDC cooling equipment and ensure a robust manufacturing base for its advanced cooling technologies.
Comprehensive “Chip-to-Cooler” Strategy
LG Electronics is actively expanding its AIDC heat management business through a comprehensive strategy that encompasses a full range of solutions. This includes not only chiller units but also coverage coolers, CDU (Coolant Distribution Units), and cold plates. This end-to-end approach, referred to as the “chip-to-cooler” solution strategy, ensures that LG can provide integrated and optimized thermal management systems for the most demanding data center environments.
The growing complexity and power consumption of AI hardware necessitate advanced cooling solutions. LG Electronics’ investment in expanding its AIDC chiller production capacity in both the US and South Korea underscores the company’s commitment to addressing these critical infrastructure needs. The new US plant, in particular, signifies a major step towards serving the North American market more effectively, ensuring timely delivery and tailored solutions for its clients.
As the global demand for data center capacity, especially for AI-intensive computing, continues its upward trajectory, LG Electronics is positioning itself as a key player in providing the essential cooling infrastructure. The combination of localized production in the US and increased capacity in South Korea, coupled with its extensive product portfolio, will enable LG to meet the evolving challenges of thermal management in the digital age.
