LG Display presents 480Hz OLED panel for gaming monitors

LG Display has introduced a new competitor in the high-end gaming monitor market – a 27-inch OLED panel with a 480Hz refresh rate combined with a sharp 1440p resolution.

LG’s new panel outperforms its own “Dual-Hz” monitor, which needed to switch to 1080p to reach 480Hz. This latest offering delivers the full refresh rate at its native 1440p resolution.

More importantly, it directly challenges Samsung’s recent OLED panel with a 360Hz refresh rate at 1440p. LG’s panel raises the bar by offering a higher refresh rate while maintaining a sharper resolution.

However, note that a refresh rate of 480 Hz may be excessive for most gamers. Studies show that the maximum visible frequency of the human eye ranges from 50-90 Hz, and in some people it reaches over 500 Hz under certain conditions. Thus, 480 Hz is at the limit of human perception in optimal scenarios.

In addition, the panel also boasts a response time of 0.03 ms, which is the fastest on the market. It’s really cool to see (or hear) these advanced features, but remember that they don’t come cheap. OLED screens are already expensive, and LG’s latest technology will make them even more so.

In addition to increased speed, LG’s META Technology promises improved brightness and viewing angles. The company also claims that the panel emits “the lowest level of blue light in the industry,” which will help reduce eye fatigue during long gaming sessions.

Although specific monitor models with this panel have not yet been announced, LG plans to release them in the first half of 2024. At CES 2024, the company will also present its entire line of gaming OLED displays, ranging from 27-inch to 45-inch.

All in all, the new OLED panel LG redefines the possibilities of gaming display technology, although its practical benefits may be limited to a niche audience.
