iOS 17 adoption pacing is slower than iOS 16

Apple announced iOS 17 at last year’s WWDC conference. The rollout of the newest iPhone operating system worldwide began in October last year. This version of the software contains many new features and changes. Now, on the Apple developer site, the company has released statistics on the transition to iOS 17 on all eligible devices. This is slower than iOS 16.

iOS 17 adoption is slower than iOS 16

The statistics published by Apple are measured on devices that made transactions in the App Store before February 4, 2024. This was first noticed by MacRumors. This is also the first time Apple has provided data on the number of iOS 17 installations.

According to the data, 76 percent of iPhones released in the last four years run on iOS 17. 20 percent of the same devices are still running iOS 16, and the remaining four percent are running an even earlier operating system. Meanwhile, of all the active iPhones that support iOS 17, only 66 percent are running the latest version. 23 percent and 11 percent of iPhones run on iOS 16 and older versions, respectively.

This data shows that iOS 17 is lagging behind iOS 16 in terms of adoption. Around this time last year, 81% of all iPhones in the last four years were running iOS 16. Apple has released three major updates to iOS 17 so far, with another expected in March.

Along with iOS 17, Apple also shared data on the progress of iPadOS 17 adoption. 61 percent of iPads introduced in the last four years have the latest version of the software. 29 percent are still running iPadOS 16, and the remaining 10 percent have an older version.
