Instagram is no longer just for square photos

Instagram now supports photos with a 3:4 aspect ratio, which means that when you upload a photo with this ratio, “it will look exactly like you took it,” says Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri in a post on Threads. He also notes that “almost every phone’s default camera” uses this format.

An image from the Instagram broadcast channel shows how this change changes things. You can already post images with a rectangular aspect ratio of 4:5, but with 3:4, your photo won’t be cropped at the edges. According to the channel, 3:4 photos are supported when uploading single photos and carousels.

If you want, you can still post photos with a square or 4:5 aspect ratio.

These changes came after Instagram made the profile grid rectangular rather than square in January. “At the moment, most of the uploaded content, both photos and videos, are vertically oriented,” Mosseri said at the time.
