GigaDevice (兆易创新), a prominent microcontroller (MCU) manufacturer, has announced its official entry into the Zephyr Project as a Silver member. This move signifies the company’s commitment to fostering a robust ecosystem around the increasingly popular open-source real-time operating system (RTOS).

Deepening Zephyr Integration for GD32 MCUs

The collaboration will see GigaDevice actively contribute to the Zephyr open-source community. The company’s engineering teams have already been hard at work, adapting its GD32 MCU series for the Zephyr Project within their internal code repositories. This proactive development has resulted in the completion of System-on-Chip (SoC) and Board Support Package (BSP) drivers for several GD32 MCU families, along with board-level support.

Developers can now access this adaptation code directly from the GigaDevice GitHub repository, streamlining the development process for embedded systems. GigaDevice has also pledged to continuously contribute code and technical support to the Zephyr community, ensuring that the integration between GD32 MCUs and Zephyr becomes even more seamless.

Expanding the Ecosystem and Developer Access

Looking ahead, GigaDevice plans to expand its efforts by adapting more GD32 MCU products for Zephyr and upstreaming these contributions. The goal is to enrich the software resources available and ensure broader chip support is integrated into the main Zephyr codebase. This will empower global developers to leverage the capabilities of GD32 MCUs for their embedded projects with greater ease.

Furthermore, GigaDevice intends to play a significant role in building the domestic Zephyr ecosystem in China. By collaborating with industry partners, the company aims to enhance the underlying infrastructure of the Zephyr ecosystem, fostering innovation and adoption within the region.

Zephyr’s Growing Influence

The Zephyr Project, an open-source, scalable, and secure RTOS for resource-constrained devices, has gained considerable traction in the embedded systems world. Its adoption by major industry players and its active community development make it a compelling choice for a wide range of IoT and embedded applications. GigaDevice’s membership is a testament to Zephyr’s growing influence and its potential to become a de facto standard for many embedded development efforts.

By joining forces with the Zephyr Project, GigaDevice is positioning its GD32 MCU offerings at the forefront of open-source embedded development, offering developers a powerful and flexible platform for their next-generation products.
