Prinz & Co. GmbH Stahlrohre, a German auto parts manufacturer with a history spanning 130 years, has officially entered preliminary insolvency proceedings. The company, also known as Prinz-Mayweg, announced the filing on September 12th, with the local court initiating the process on September 9th.

Founded in 1896, the company has employed hundreds of people and specialized in the manufacturing and deep processing of precision steel tubes. Its products are critical components in various automotive systems, including seat assemblies, dashboard brackets, airbag fixings, and tailgate hydraulic struts.

Industry Slump and Rising Costs Take Their Toll

Christian Holzmann, the provisional insolvency administrator, cited the general downturn in the automotive industry as a primary reason for the company’s financial distress. He further explained that soaring raw material and energy procurement prices, coupled with persistently high fixed costs, have significantly exacerbated the company’s financial pressure. This difficult situation culminated in a sharp decline in revenue during the summer months, pushing the company into a liquidity crisis.

The impact of these proceedings is primarily felt at the company’s manufacturing base in Germany, where approximately 310 jobs are at risk. Despite the insolvency, the affected factory is expected to continue its production operations without interruption for the time being. To support the workforce, employees’ salaries for the next three months will be fully covered by Germany’s official insolvency benefit scheme.

Restructuring and Investor Search Underway

The core objective of the current insolvency proceedings is to facilitate a restructuring of the company. The management team is actively engaged in business negotiations with key customers and members of the supply chain. Concurrently, a process to recruit strategic investors has been initiated.

The automotive industry has been facing a challenging period globally, with supply chain disruptions, fluctuating demand, and the ongoing transition to electric vehicles creating a complex operating environment for many manufacturers and suppliers. The bankruptcy of a long-standing component supplier like Prinz-Mayweg underscores the significant pressures currently facing the sector.

Further updates on the restructuring efforts and the search for investors are anticipated as the proceedings develop.
