The highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, the next installment in the Final Fantasy VII Remake series, could require a staggering 200GB of storage space, according to game director Naoki Hamaguchi. Speaking at the 2026 Tokyo Game Show, Hamaguchi revealed that the game’s final size is still being determined but is expected to significantly exceed previous entries.

Pushing the Boundaries of Storage

When questioned about whether the game’s download size would surpass the two Blu-ray discs used for its predecessors, Hamaguchi confirmed that it likely would. “Simply put, yes,” he stated. “There are still some details that aren’t finalized, but the game size will be around 200GB.” He acknowledged that this figure might raise concerns among players but emphasized the necessity of pushing hardware limitations to deliver the intended experience.

“I know there are many different opinions about this, but in the end, we really need to push the hardware limits to a certain extent,” Hamaguchi explained.

The Future of Physical Media

Addressing the future of physical copies, Hamaguchi expressed a desire to still offer a physical product for Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, even if the complete game content isn’t fully contained on the disc. This is due to the evolving landscape of physical media, with the possibility of discs becoming less common. “There’s one more thing I’d like to mention, although the full game content won’t be on the disc, considering that discs might gradually leave the market, or they might continue to exist, for Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, we absolutely want to provide some form of physical product. That is really important to us. Believe me!”

Storage Demands vs. Past Titles

For context, Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth required 155GB of storage space upon its PC release in January 2025. Both the original Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth featured physical editions that utilized two Blu-ray discs. However, Rebirth is slated to use only a single disc, meaning all physical editions across platforms will necessitate additional downloads to complete the game data.

The PlayStation 5’s standard Blu-ray discs have a maximum capacity of 100GB. Therefore, including the entire game on physical media would require at least two discs. Hamaguchi did not specify which platform the 200GB estimate pertains to, and further details will be revealed when the full system requirements for each platform are announced.

Release Information

Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth is scheduled for release on April 8, 2027, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the Nintendo Switch 2.
